The Getty Images and Chris Hondros Fund Award was created in 2012 to honor photojournalist and two-time Pulitzer Prize nominee Chris Hondros – the award-winning Getty Images photojournalist killed April 20, 2011 in a mortar attack by government forces in Misrata, Libya – his work and his distinctive ability to bring shared human experiences into the public eye.
Chris covered the world’s hotspots for Getty Images, including conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and Liberia, with dedication, compassion and a soulful purpose. He recognized the shared humanity among those affected by war, regardless of culture or beliefs, and was determined to share their challenges to the wider world in the hope of provoking thought, raising awareness and fostering understanding. Chris helped give shape and vision to our photography and create a culture of news gathering that defines our organization today.
